Man Utd 2 – 0 Perth
Saturday 13 July 2019
Goalscorers: Rashford 60’, Garner 85’
Daniel James played for the first half and Aaron Wan-Bissaka
the second, as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer gave much-needed playing time to 23 members
of a 24-man squad that was named for the match.
Unused substitute David De Gea watched from the bench, while Lee Grant, Eric Bailly, Victor Lindelof and Romelu Lukaku all supported the team from the stands after being rested due to what the manager has described as “niggles”.
Academy graduates Marcus Rashford and James Garner scored the decisive goals, with finishes that Solskjaer would have have been proud of during his predatory playing career.
There was also a debut for the new adidas away kit for 2019/20 after it was revealed and put on sale by the club on Friday.
Man Utd 4 – 0 Leeds
Wednesday 17 July 2019
Goalscorers: Greenwood 07’, Rashford 27’, Jones 51’, Martial 69’
The first meeting between Manchester United and Leeds United since 2011 resulted in a comprehensive Reds victory, thanks to goals from Mason Greenwood, Marcus Rashford, Phil Jones and Anthony Martial (pen).
While the Tour 2019 match was only a friendly, it was played
in front of 55,274 fans amid a lively atmosphere at Optus Stadium, where both
sides competed in a manner that befitted the fixture’s history.
Energy and intensity were again features of the performance from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side. Some of the attacking football, particularly on the counter, was really pleasing on the eye.
Once again, the boss handed out valuable playing time to 23 members of his squad and he also started new signings Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Daniel James together for the first time. Axel Tuanzebe was the only unused substitute, while the ill David De Gea and injured Lee Grant, Luke Shaw and Romelu Lukaku were all ruled out ahead of kick-off.
The victory adds further confidence to the squad following last weekend’s 2-0 success over Perth Glory and attention now turns to this Saturday’s bigger test, against Internazionale in Singapore.
Man Utd 1 – 0
Saturday 20 July
Goalscorer: Greenwood 76’
Mason Greenwood stepped off the bench to score the winning goal, as Manchester United made it three wins from three on Tour 2019 with a confident 1-0 victory over Inter Milan in Singapore.
The 17-year-old Academy youngster scored his first goal in
senior football against Leeds United in midweek and followed it up with another
strike, which displayed his devastating finishing ability.
Although the scoreline suggests it was a closely contested match in the International Champions Cup, in truth, the Reds were dominant from start to finish and could have scored many more goals against the Italians.
It was an excellent performance, filled with potential, and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will surely feel pleased by the progress of a squad that is clearly growing in fitness, sharpness and confidence.
The only sour notes were a couple of second-half injuries, after Victor Lindelof and lively substitute Tahith Chong were forced off with knocks. An assessment will be made on the pair in due course.
Tottenham Hotspur 1 –
2 Man Utd
Thursday 25 July 2019
Goalscorers: Martial 21’, Gomes 80’
As in the win over Internazionale in Singapore, an Academy
graduate stepped off the bench to provide the game’s decisive moment, and Ole
Gunnar Solskjaer’s team required it, against a competitive Spurs side that
provided our stiffest test of Tour 2019 so far.
Anthony Martial had given United the lead in the first half, but some effective half-time substitutions from Spurs led to an equaliser for the Lilywhites in the second period, before Gomes’s sublime intervention steered the Reds back on course for another win.
The only negative for Solskjaer’s men was an injury to Eric Bailly, who was taken from the field on a stretcher less than 15 minutes after coming on as one of 11 half-time substitutes. But the manager and his staff will be content with a gutsy, feisty performance in a match between two Premier League big-hitters that did not always appear ‘friendly’.
Kristiansund – Man Ud
Tuesday 30 July 2019
Goalscorer: Mata 90+2’
Manchester United made it five wins out of five in the pre-season campaign with a 1-0 friendly victory against Kristiansund in Oslo.
Juan Mata scored the only goal of the game in stoppage time, from the penalty spot, to end the Norwegians’ dogged resistance and Reds boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s son Noah came off the bench for Kristiansund in the second half.
The manager made six changes to the XI that started against Tottenham, with Anthony Martial operating down the middle with Marcus Rashford heavily involved, cutting in from the left flank. He changed his entire line-up on the hour mark to ensure more minutes in the tank for most of the squad.
Man Utd 2 – 2 Milan
Saturday 3 August
Goalscorers: Rashford 14’, Lingard 72’
Manchester United beat AC Milan 5-4 on penalties in the International Champions Cup in Cardiff to complete an unbeaten 2019 pre-season campaign.
The topsy-turvy game at the Principality Stadium finished deadlocked at 2-2 after 90 minutes, but substitute Daniel James struck the winning spot-kick after David De Gea saved Daniel Maldini’s weak effort.
Earlier, Marcus Rashford had given United the lead, before former Liverpool man Suso restored parity.
Samu Castillejo’s deflected header off Victor Lindelof put Milan in front on the hour mark, but the Reds fought back to level through substitute Jesse Lingard and send the match to a shoot-out.
The result puts us on eight points in the International Champions Cup table, meaning Benfica cannot be caught and are ICC champions for 2019.
