Sheffiled United 1 –
0 Real Betis
12 July 2019
The Algarve Stadium
United opened Premier League preparations with an impressive victory over Spanish top flight side Real Betis.
At Portugal’s Estadio Algarve, concluding a week on the Algarve for United’s players, David McGoldrick scored the winner as Blades fans numbered 1,052 in the crowd of 1,520.
It was the first pre-season game for both sides and after an even opening 10 minutes, it was Chris Wilder’s side who managed to force themselves on the opposition. Clarke was off target with a shot and O’Connell headed wide at the back post.
Burton Albion 2 – 1
16 July 2019
Despite taking the lead through Billy Sharp, United suffered a narrow pre-season loss at Burton Albion on Tuesday night.
The Brewers levelled before the interval through former Blade John Brayford, before Marcus Harness won it with the goal of the night in stoppage-time.
Northampton Town 0 –
2 Sheffield United
20 July 2019
PTS Academy Stadium.
Two first-half Ollie Norwood penalties secured United a pre-season victory at Keith Curle’s Northampton Town on Saturday.
The Blades team showed starts for Jagielka and Robinson but Northampton’s Williams forced two routine saves from Moore in the first three minutes. United were not slow out of the blocks, though, McGoldrick fired over and headed wide from a Stevens cross when unmarked on six minutes.
The defences – both sides playing with three at the back – managed to get on top, despite Fleck having an effort saved and Lines curling a free-kick wide, until a penalty broke the deadlock on 23 minutes. Robinson was fouled by Hutton and NORWOOD’s spot-kick beat Cornell for pace to give United the lead.
Around the half hour, the visitors had a number of chances to extend the lead. Fleck played through McGoldrick but his shot was blocked by the body of the home side’s goalkeeper and from three consecutive corners, efforts from Lundstram, O’Connell and Norwood were deflected wide.
A second goal was forthcoming, though, and from a similar route to the first. On 44 minutes, Kieron Freeman was felled by late challenge in the box and NORWOOD converted his second penalty, finding the same spot as his first.
Chesterfield 0 – 5
23 July 2019
A Billy Sharp hat-trick helped United down near-neighbours Chesterfield at the Proact Stadium.
The Blades’ pre-season preparations continued with a win in Derbyshire, as Sharp took the headlines following goals either side of the interval, whilst new signings Callum Robinson and Luke Freeman were also on target as United enjoyed a comfortable win in sultry conditions.
Chris Wilder gave starts to three close season signings in Robinson, Luke Freeman and Phil Jagielka, and it was the former who created United’s first opportunity.
Barnsley 1 – 4
The Blades made it four wins out of five this pre-season, after beating local neighbours Barnsley at Oakwell.
A debut goal for Ben Osborn, a double for Callum Robinson and a late strike by Luke Freeman helped United secure a 4-1 victory. Ravel Morrison also featured for the first time for the Blades.
Chris Wilder gave starts to new boys, Dean Henderson and Osborn, with Morrison making his first appearance for United from the bench.
Stade de Reims 3 – 1
03 August 2019
Stade de Reims
United ended the pre-season campaign with a 3-1 defeat against Stade de Reims in France.
The Blades had the lead through Callum Robinson’s fourth goal of pre-season but goals from Remi Oudin, Alaixys Romao and Xavier Chavalerin won the contest for the Ligue 1 side.
New club record signing Oli McBurnie was among the substitutes as United played the final game before Saturday’s big Premier League kick off at Bournemouth.
